I had the opportunity to bounce up to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to go see a friend play at the Capitol Club. I figured I would go treat myself to some damn fine pizza (and maybe a shot and a beer) since I was in the neighborhood so I popped into Bill’s Off Broadway.

If you’re not familiar with Bill’s Off Broadway, it’s located at the corner of Pine & Harvard on Capitol Hill in Seattle. It’s a very “non-assuming” bar that doesn’t look like much. However, the people who work there are cool, they make awesome food, pour great drinks, and take care of people.

So I ordered my usual of a mini pepperoni pizza with garlic and extra cheese. It was a plate of pure heaven. The only bad thing about this particular meal was that I was kicking myself for not ordering a bigger pizza. The mini went down way too fast.

I have to say I enjoy going to the Town Crier when I go home to the Tri-Cities. The Crier has been there for as long as I can remember and I think for as long as my parents can remember too. This place has a lot of history and is usually where you can find any of your old friends. For those friends who have moved away and still visit, you can bet you’ll bump into them when they’re back. The next time you’re there, be sure to have a shot and a beer….

Well, it was Saturday night fight night (UFC 84 “ill will”) and I found myself at the Spectator. I got there a little before 5:30 on the advice of Ron. It was fun to be back there because it had been some time since I’d been in.

I bellied up to the bar and ordered a their Blue Cheese burger. Now, it wasn’t bad. There could have been a little more flavor to the burger and it could have been cooked a couple more minutes. But hey, what are you gonna do? The best part of the meal were the fries. I totally forgot that the Spectator serves crinkle-cut fries. Crinkle cut fries are the best fries in the world! Any meal is a good meal with crinkle-cut fries.

I topped the burger off with their brownie sundae dessert. It was pretty good. The brownie could have been heated, but it was still pretty good.

Overall, it was a good time at the Spectator watching the UFC. I got to see some really good fights and the main event between BJ Penn and Sean Sherk didn’t disappoint. To anyone who didn’t get a chance to check out their UFC night, you will want to make sure you make it next time.

Last night I was jumping around from coffee place to coffee place having a hard time finding a place where I could get some work done. When I would find a place, the Wifi connection would be about as “fast as old people……. walking”. So what was I to do?

I knew Jabus has WiFi but didn’t really want to go there because it’s usually a weekend spot and not a weekday spot. So I figured it would be a good time to pop in, get some work done, and maybe try their hot wings.

Gotta say, the wings were decent. Nothing spectacular and I have definitely had worse. So let’s start with the good:

They were good sized wings with a lot of meat

The breading was perfect. Not too much and not too little.

The bleu cheese dressing that came with the order was good with the appropriate ratio of bleu cheese chunks in it.

Even the little carrots were good. Wait, where was the celery? hmmm….

So you’re probably saying by now “how could they be bad”? Well, I wanted them HOT! The hotness of these wings was perfect for a skinny little 7 year old who cries whenever he skins his knee. I love HOT wings. I’m talking about wings that make you sweat. I’m talking about wings that make you go through a couple pitchers of water. I’m talking about wings that make you pause a few minutes between each new wing. Every now and then I like some hot wings that make you do a little prayin’ the next morning if you know what I mean.

So anyways, the wings at Jabus are a little tame but still very good.

Jabus is the quintessential neighborhood bar. There is nothing pretentious or flashy about this bar whatsoever. Jabus is divided into two separate levels. The upper level is wide open with a few booths and a few tall tables. The actual bar is located towards the rear of the room. All of the action takes place at the pool table / beer pong table when you first walk through the door.

At the bottom bar, the atmosphere is a bit more intimate. The lighting is a little darker and the horse shoe shape bar takes up most of the space. There are only three booths with the rest of the seating space located at the rail.

They serve some excellent food. In fact, their Mac n’ Cheese is outstanding. I’ve also had their burgers which are also above average. I’ll dedicate more content to their menu in future posts.

Jabus is one of the few bars in Seattle that is able to create a very comfortable and inviting atmosphere that is hard to pass up. The owners and bartenders are cool and they are some of the friendliest people in Seattle.

Jabus is located at the corner of Roy Street and 2nd Ave North in Seattle. You should go there sometime.

Let me tell you about the mac ‘n cheese at Jabu’s in Lower Queen Anne. It is “heaven in a bowl”. The noodles are huge, the cheese sauce is rich and creamy, it has a little bits of bacon to add a little flare, and to top it off (no pun intended) it has a great Parmesian bread crumbles sprinkled on top.

The portion was about three times bigger than I needed and the price was completely reasonable. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for some mac & cheese.
